A day after loss, conservatives point fingers

(CNN) – Following Mitt Romney’s loss to President Barack Obama, conservative leaders wasted no time Wednesday offering pointed criticism of the Republican Party and its pick for president.

A coalition of social conservatives and tea party activists gathered in Washington to decry what they described as Romney’s failure to represent conservatives on a national level.

“We wanted someone who would fight for us. What we got was a weak, moderate candidate, hand-picked by the Beltway elites and country club establishment wing of the Republican Party,” Jenny Beth Martin, co-founder of Tea Party Patriots, said in a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington.

“The presidential loss is unequivocally on them,” she added.

Pushed from the right in the Republican presidential primary, Romney sought to paint himself as “severely conservative,” though the former Massachusetts governor had taken Democratic positions on certain issues in his political past.

Brent Bozell, president of the conservative Media Research Center, argued that Romney failed to pass the ideological test, saying he ran as a “Democrat-light” and adjusted his positions to campaign as a moderate during the general election.

“At the end of the day, conservatives were left out in the cold. It should have been a landslide for Romney, had he embraced a truly conservative agenda,” Bozell said. “But Romney’s a moderate and his campaign embarked on a bizarre…defense from the outset.”

He further faulted the GOP presidential nominee for not adopting a political strategy of defining his opponent and going on the attack early on. Citing the president’s record, Bozell argued “it should have been a cakewalk for Romney to define (the president), but he didn’t–hence Obama’s victory.”

On social issues, Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the anti-abortion rights group Susan B. Anthony List, blasted the candidate for not making abortion a central part of the 2012 dialogue.

“He took all the right stances,” she said. “The problem was not communicating on the national stage with Obama what his actual positions were.”

The group endorsed Romney after he unofficially became the nominee in April when former Sen. Rick Santorum dropped out of the race. Dannenfelser said they were “happy to endorse him when the time came” but expressed frustration when she said “we assumed, that given who he was, he would make (abortion) more of a national issue.”

Looking at the party on a macro-level, activists also acknowledged Republicans had work to do in terms of adapting to the country’s demographic changes. Alfred Regnery, president of the Paul Revere Project, issued a stark warning for the GOP.

“If Republicans don’t start to listen to (what minorities are looking for in a candidate), it’s going to be a long time before they can win,” he said.

His comments echoed those made my former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who earlier Wednesday said on CNN that the party now faces a “very serious moment” and argued the GOP should work on becoming more inclusive–a major challenge, he said, for House Republicans.

“The question is do they want to, in a disciplined way, create a schedule and a program and include people who are not traditionally Republican?” he said.

All the activists at the press conference agreed that Tuesday’s election signaled a need for the GOP to re-institute more conservative “fundamentals.” While some argue the Republican Party’s failure to retake the Senate or make gains in the House suggests the tea party is losing steam, the group of individuals Wednesday argued the opposite.

Given this week’s results, they said, conservatives will be even more motivated to reform the party. Richard A. Viguerie, chairman of ConservatieHQ.com, ended the press conference with one final prediction.

“Tea partiers will take over the Republican Party within four years,” he said.

Obama Campaign Ramps Up Attacks On Mitt Romney

October 8, 2012 in America's Collapse, Anarchy, Hope and Change, Mitt Romney, Obama's America 2016, President Obama, Propaganda, RomneyRyan, The Hope and The Change

“So you don’t think that’s questioning their patriotism when you say that?”   — An incredulous George Stephanopoulos of ABC News in an Oct. 18, 2004 interview asking President George W. Bush about his charge that Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry’s plan to withdraw from Iraq was “surrender.”

After President Obama’s sour showing in last week’s debate, he and his team adopted a curious seeming response.

Team Obama said Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, a man Democrats (and Republicans) have long been saying is a stiff, awkward, un-relatable bore, was a slick and artful politician.

Huh?

Obama’s senior political adviser, David Axelrod, even told CBS News on Sunday that Romney’s performance was “Gantry-esque.” That was a reference to Elmer Gantry, Sinclair Lewis’ con artist evangelist whom Burt Lancaster played in spellbinding fashion in the movie version.

Gantry was a fraud — a hard-drinking womanizer whose fire and brimstone sermons were just a means to con rubes out of their money. He was an undoubtedly evil character.

So Romney, previously jeered as a gaffe-prone, bumbling blueblood who couldn’t connect with voters, suddenly turned into an evil, mesmerizing, tent-revival hustler?

Fact Check: Obama says Romney opposed ending tax break – only he didn’t

A day after the Obama campaign countered Mitt Romney’s strong debate performance by accusing him of playing fast and loose with the facts, President Obama threw out a doozy of his own.   At a rally Friday in Fairfax, Va., Obama claimed Romney had outright rejected his proposal to end tax breaks for oil and gas companies.   “He said there’s no way that he’d close the loophole that gives big oil companies billions each year in corporate warfare,” Obama said, in the middle of a litany of complaints on Romney’s tax positions from Wednesday’s debate.   Just one problem. Romney didn’t say that.   Rather, the Republican nominee said that if tax rates are lowered as his plan calls for, the $2.8 billion in breaks for oil companies should be on the table.   Here’s what Romney said:   “But, you know, if we get that tax rate from 35 percent down to 25 percent, why that $2.8 billion is on the table. Of course it’s on the table. That’s probably not going to survive (if) you get that rate down to 25 percent.”   The president, though, has been trying to recover from Wednesday’s debate by casting the Republican nominee as an ideological shape-shifter. He claimed Thursday that the Romney who showed up to debate him is not the same Romney who’s been showing up on the campaign trail.   Campaign adviser David Axelrod called Romney a “serial evader” and an “artful dodger” in a conference call Thursday.   “What we learned is that he’ll say anything that makes him effective in the short term but vulnerable in the long term,” Axelrod said.   However, Romney told Fox News in an interview Thursday that the president just “wasn’t happy with the response to our debate.”   He reiterated he wants to bring tax rates down while reducing deductions. “What the president’s been saying and the reality are pretty far apart,” Romney said.

Obama Admin Within 24 Hrs Knew It Was A Terror Attack in Libya & Who Did It & Misled Americans!

September 27, 2012 in Al Qaeda, Anarchy, Election, Homeland Security, Hope and Change, Mitt Romney, National Security, Obama's America 2016, Politics, President Obama, Propaganda, RomneyRyan

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton suggested the deadly consulate attack in Libya involved the Al Qaeda affiliate in North Africa, going further than any other Obama administration official in acknowledging the assault was the work of hardened terrorists.

Clinton was speaking Wednesday to foreign leaders gathered at a meeting convened by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to address the threat of extremism in the region.
“Now with a larger safe haven and increased freedom to maneuver, terrorists are seeking to extend their reach and their networks in multiple directions,” Clinton told the group, according to a New York Times report. “And they are working with other violent extremists to undermine the democratic transitions under way in North Africa, as we tragically saw in Benghazi.”

It wasn’t the first time Clinton had referred to the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, as a terrorist attack. But her reference to the group Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb was notable, especially as President Obama still has yet to publicly refer to the attack as terrorism.

Republicans have pounced on the administration’s shifting explanation for the Sept. 11 attack, which left U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans dead. Administration officials initially described it as “spontaneous” violence, possibly related to protests against an anti-Islam film produced in the U.S., but the administration has gradually walked that explanation back while acknowledging the attack was an act of terror.

The White House said Wednesday that Obama, too, considers the deadly assault an act of terror. Press Secretary Jay Carney said it is “certainly the case that it is our view as an administration, and the president’s view, that it was a terrorist attack.”

Carney’s comments came after Mitt Romney accused Obama of failing to “level with the American people” about the nature of the attack.

Obama has declined several chances to call the incident a terrorist attack. He said last week that extremists used an anti-Islam video as an excuse to assault U.S. interests, and in an interview this week on ABC’s “The View,” he would only say that it clearly “wasn’t just a mob action.”

On Capitol Hill, eight Republicans who head House committees sent a letter to Obama saying they were disturbed by statements from administration officials suggesting that the attack was a protest gone wrong rather than a terrorist attack. They said they would be willing to return to Washington from Congress’ nearly two-month recess if the administration scheduled another briefing on Libya.

Clinton and senior Pentagon and intelligence officials briefed members of the House and Senate last Thursday on Libya.

Republican Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina called the continued threat of terrorism “an inconvenient truth” for Obama, given his re-election campaign’s efforts to tout the progress made against Al Qaeda.

“But it is not too much to ask why the president and his administration have taken so long to state what has appeared obvious for a long time about what really happened in Benghazi,” the senators said in a joint statement. “This is just one more example of this president’s failure to lead in the Middle East and how that failure has threatened America’s national security interests. Now is not the time to lead from behind.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
